Hello fellow students,
I am Matt Anderson, and it is with great honor to serve as your president of your student association. As president I am charged with the responsibility to serve as your official spokesperson, further the interests of the student body, and to achieve the objectives of your SMUSA Board of Directors. I also represent you on campus serving on the Saint Mary’s University Board of Governors and the Academic Senate. I am also your representative to our federal and provincial governments as well as our local community.
This year is full of new and exciting challenges ahead. Challenges I am looking forward to taking on. This year SMUSA will be going back to its grass roots and engaging students by developing a student communications strategy which you will see throughout the academic year. We will be providing you the forums that are needed to raise your concerns so that SMUSA can properly represent you.
Communication between students and SMUSA will be critical. This year SMUSA will be evaluating every service the university provides to you. We are doing this to identify the necessary improvements that are needed to these services in order to provide students the tools for success. So please provide me any feedback on your experiences on campus.
SMUSA will also be taking strong stances this year to ensure that students are informed of their academic rights and to further these rights. We plan on pushing the university to adopt a policy regarding the acceptance of sick notes, and to ensure that course syllabi are followed properly so that a student has a clear understanding of their responsibilities to a class. SMUSA will also be doing campaigns to inform you of course withdrawal deadlines and your right to appeal a grade given to you.
This year SMUSA will also be advocating the importance of a knowledge economy with the Alliance of Nova Scotia Students Association, your provincial lobby group. In other words, we will be lobbying the Nova Scotia government about the importance investing in universities, and making a post-secondary education in Nova Scotia more affordable for you so that we have a strong educated work force in the future.
Remember; as a fee paying student at Saint Mary’s you have the right to hold me to a standard as an elected official. So please do not hesitate to visit my office or stop me if you see me on campus to voice any concerns.
Truly yours,
Matt Anderson
