Society Classification
SMUSA societies are assigned a classification by the BOD when they are ratified. This classification reflects what the society outlined as their purpose in their mandate within their submitted constitution. All SMUSA societies are categorized into one of five classifications:
• Class A: Faculty Societies
• Class B: Social Societies
• Class C: Clubs or University-funded groups
• Class D: Political or Religious Societies
• Class E: Campus Media Societies
Class A:
For the purposes of classification the A Societies shall be:
1. those Societies that have a membership made up of the Association's members who are students of a particular Faculty or Major offered by the University; and
2. entitled to apply for Association
a. Funding, and
b. Office space provided that the Faculty or academic department has refused to provide the Society with office space.
Class B:
For the purpose of classification the B Societies shall be:
1. those Societies that have membership open to all members of the Association; and
2. entitled to apply for Association
a. funding; and
b. office space
Class C:
For the purpose of classification the C Societies shall be:
1. those Societies that are funded and/or governed by a University Department;
2. those Societies that are not directly affiliated with the Association;
3. entitled to apply for Association Office Space provided the Department they are affiliated with cannot provide the Society with any space; and
4. ineligible to apply for Association funding
Class D:
For the purpose of classification the D Societies shall be:
1. those Societies which are either politically or religiously orientated or have a partisan outlook; and
2. not be entitled to Association
a. Funding, or
b. Office space.
Class E:
For the purpose of classification the E Societies shall be:
1. those Societies that are non-partisan by nature;
2. those Societies that provide the Association's members with a form of media coverage;
3. required to create a Board of Directors, that shall
a. have a representation of no less than twenty-five percent (25%) of BOD appointed voting members, and
b. meet at least once per semester;
4. entitled to apply for Association
a. funding, should the Society not already have a form of student funding, and
b. Office space.
