The Saint Mary's University yearbook is known as the "Santamarian". Each year the book is produced by the Students' Association Yearbook Department and a copy is provided to all graduating students. In 1995 there was a student referendum that passed which applies a $7 fees to all full-time students and a $5 fee to all part-time students to cover the cost of the book. This money is restricted entirely for the production of the book. The book contains a look back at the previous year with many pictures and write-ups. A typical yearbook contains a photo of the freshman class, messages from the Student President and the University President, events such as Orientation Week activities, Gorsebrook Lounge activities, Society activities, and Residence activities. Also included is a year in review of the SMU varsity and club teams. At the back of the book you will find the graduation section. This section contains the grad list of all graduates with their degree, certificates and hometown listed. The grad photo section includes pictures of all the grads that submitted photos to the yearbook. Each year, the yearbook contains grad lists and photos from both the spring convocation and the fall convocation. (For example: The 2006 yearbook project began in September of 2005 and captures all activity in the 2005 2006 academic year including the spring convocation in May 2006 as well as the fall convocation in November of 2006) The yearbook is then mailed to student in February/March of the following year (2007).
Information for Graduating Students
All graduating students will receive a copy of the "Santamarian" which is mailed out upon completion of the book in February/March of each year. * It is important for graduating students to ensure that their mailing address at the Registrar's Office is correct when they graduate so that their copy of the book will be mailed to the address where they or a family member resides. Copies of past yearbooks are also available from the SMUSA Info Desk.
The Students' Association has established a relationship with a preferred photographer to make it easier for students to get their picture in the yearbook. Our objective is to have a grad photo for each and every graduate in the yearbook. Currently there are approx. 70% of grads with photos in the yearbook but we want that number to grow. When you receive your yearbook in the mail wouldn't you want to see your picture. This book will be your lifetime keepsake. We encourage all graduating students to get their grad pictures taken by About Image Photography. To make an appointment with About Image Photography please call 429-1977. About Image Photography is located at 5651 Inglis St, Halifax.
Why use About Image?
• SMUSA has established an $20 sitting fee that is less than what you would pay at other studios. A portion of this fee goes back to the Grad Class to assist them in organizing Grad Week Activities. We want all grads to use About Image because it makes the process of submitting photos in the book easier.
• We bring About Image to campus a few times a year to make it easier for students to get pictures taken. (when you call to book your appointment, ask them when they are on campus next)
• When you get your pictures taken at About Image Photography, they are responsible for submitting your picture to the Yearbook Department. If you get your pictures taken by another photographer, you, the graduate, are responsible for submitting a hard copy directly to the Yearbook Office. We will not accept digital photos from anyone except About Image Photography and we will only accept a hard copy photo directly from the student.
• The deadline for About Image Photography to submit grad pictures to the yearbook office is two weeks after convocation day. For students who use another photographer, the deadline to submit your hard copy picture is two weeks before convocation day.
• If all students use About Image Photography then there is uniformity in the grad picture section. About Image Photography has all the proper SMU regalia (hoods and gowns)
We encourage all graduating students to get their pictures taken early because the deadline comes fast. Avoid delays.
Please Note : SMUSA will not accept pictures submitted electronically from students or photographers other that About Image Photography
