Shinerama
SMUSA's 2011 Shinerama campaign smashed its goal of $11,000 and raised more than $20,000 for cystic fibrosis research! In fact, SMU won a national award from Cystic Fibrosis Canada for "Best Secondary Fundraiser" for our Car Wash/Rent a Football Player to Help Move Into Residence Day. For 2012, we want to build on that success, but we need the support of as many students, faculty and staff as possible. Download and fill out the attached form and email it to Carrigan Desjardins, our VP Student Life to join the team. We'll be planning our primary fundraiser (which happens during Orientation Week), some secondary fundraisers (like bar blitzes), and engaging the university community for support and participation.
We'll be updating this page with our events and goals throughout the Summer, stay tuned!
Cystic fibrosis is (CF) is a fatal, inherited disease that causes progressive damage to the lungs and digestive systems of its young victims. In Canada, over 3,800 children and young adults have CF, and more than a million Canadians carry the gene responsible for cystic fibrosis. Despite aggressive treatment, lung infection and its complications eventually claim the life of virtually every person with CF.
When Shinerama began in 1964, most kids with CF did not live long enough to attend kindergarten, but now thanks to research and treatment there is real hope that those living with CF can go to school, have a career and start a family.
There are more than 60 other schools taking part in Shinerama across Canada and our goal is to raise $1,035,000 this year!
Here at the Saint Mary’s University Students’ Association we think this is a great cause and would appreciate your support of SMU’s Shinerama campaign. We hope that someday when we see CF, we can say ‘Cure Found’ and know we made a difference.
