International students have been significantly affected by COVID-19 and we have been working hard to advocate for international students, especially when it comes to financial assistance and immigration pathways. On July 14th, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced important temporary changes for international students:
- International Students can count the Fall 2020 semester towards their Post-Graduate Work Permit, even if they are studying online from home.
- There is a new 2-stage approval process that allows international students to receive “approval-in-principle” even if they can’t submit all the required documents due to COVID-19.
- IRCC is prioritizing study permit applications for international students who have applied online.

These are great steps forward, but there is more work to do! If you’re an international student and have questions about this announcement, or you have concerns about your education, send us a message on social media @smusahfx or at smusa.ca/contact!
